As a world leader in the oil and gas industry, BP operates at every stage of the energy lifecycle. In this highly competitive and constantly changing international market, we need leadership to help us stay ahead of the industry. Our Future Leaders Programme (FLP) is a 4 year global rotation programme which takes enthusiastic, talented people from a range of professional backgrounds and gives them the skills and opportunities to drive our Downstream business forward.

Our global programme will make the most of your potential, talent and experience. All whilst giving you the skills and opportunity to lead BP into the future and develop your own long-term career. We’ll ask you to share your ambitions, strengths and ideas, so together, we can tailor the best development programme to suit and stretch you.

Your mentor will guide and support you on your journey. You’ll be given real responsibility plus exposure to our business and the global energy industry. What’s more, you’ll be part of a close, supportive Future Leaders Programme community with plenty of networking opportunities.

Key requirements and desired attributes

To apply to the Future Leaders Programme you will need:

  • Postgraduate degree (i.e.MBA, PhD, MSc or MEng)
  • At least five years’ relevant professional experience or equivalent *

* Five years’ relevant professional experience is usually required but we will consider exceptional applications from those with less experience.

We’re proud of our diversity, so there’s no single mould for our leaders. However, those that benefit the most from the Future Leaders Programme are people who are flexible self-starters with real initiative to drive their career; people who are adaptable to an environment that evolves as their experience grows and who have a flexible outlook to work anywhere in the world.

We look for leaders who listen and are comfortable giving and receiving feedback; those who are respectful of the people they work with, and have the courage to speak up when something isn’t right or could be better. If you’re eager to learn, open to new ideas, determined to succeed and able to build strong professional relationships; then you have precisely what we look for in a future leader.

Training, development and support

The ultimate aim of the Future Leaders Programme is to develop, stretch and challenge your skills, so you should be flexible and prepared to work in a position that will truly test you. You’ll take part in two approximately 24 months rotations, one of which will be international giving you the chance to live and work in another country.

We pride ourselves on giving the right support so you can achieve your full potential. You’ll receive structured training through our leadership development programmes, as well as more technical subjects related to your discipline. At every step you’ll have a dedicated mentor and access to our senior leaders who will advise, support and guide you on your journey.

With your level of ambition and initiative, we ‘ll also expect you to actively seek feedback from them so you can shape and drive your development. There are opportunities to attend annual conferences and dedicated FLP networking events. You’ll be part of a supportive community where you can share experiences with people who are as bright and capable as you are.

Within two and a half years I have seen my career advance as a result of being able to operate as part of the global FLP network – it has enabled me to connect with people in similar roles around the world, to share learnings and exchange ideas to improve business performance. I am excited to have recently started my second role in AirBP where I manage all operational and commercial aspects of multiple on airfield fuelling joint ventures around the UK. I will shortly be given company director responsibilities and am using this opportunity to demonstrate safety and commercial leadership over and above my engineering base.
