Supply and trading

Supply and trading is BP's face to the traded markets in oil, gas, power, chemicals and finance

In supply and trading we have two distinct rotational graduate programmes, depending on your career aspirations:

  • Our Trading Development Programme (TDP) is for those who see their future in commodities trading. You’ll join the TDP as an operator, trade control analyst, market analyst, charterer, or trading analyst.
  • Our supply and trading Development Programme is for those who would like to join us in a commercial or operational capacity and start the journey towards being a future leader of our business. You’ll join the supply and trading Development Programme in commercial, analytics, technology, finance or risk.

Wherever you join us in supply and trading, you’ll be joining a unique, diverse, multi-national organisation which will give you exposure to both supply and trading. Our trading environment is different because it’s not part of a large financial institution. But as a graduate on our TDP, you’ll still have the opportunity to take the Assessed Traders Course. On some of our programmes, you may also have the opportunity to apply for an international assignment.

As long as you possess strong analytical skills and have a keen interest in financial markets, you can join most supply and trading programmes from any degree discipline. We’ll make sure that we give you every opportunity to gain the technical and professional skills you need to succeed, through formal training and practical learning. On top of this, you’ll have a buddy and mentor assigned to you, helping you to navigate the organisation, guide your development and learn what it takes to be successful in your career.

Supply and trading's role is to enhance performance and maximize group value for our assets through distinctive supply, commodity trading, risk management and information technology, underpinned by a world-class finance, control and compliance infrastructure

Commercial IST

Overview

Every year, BP invests billions of dollars searching for new sources of energy and supplying our customers with the fuels they need. Join us as a commercial graduate and you’ll help to ensure we make the best use of our investment. What we do is hugely challenging, but we’ll ensure you have everything you need to understand the commercial aspects of our business. We want you to be in the best position to propose new and creative ways to maximise value. We have a number of challenging opportunities that enable you to learn and grow in our business; to use your skills and to develop your commercial interests, wherever they might lie.

Your role and responsibilities

Supply and trading is one of the world’s largest and most successful energy trading organisations. We engage in controlled trading around our asset and supply position and the commodities we trade go way beyond crude oil and natural gas. Within supply and trading, you could be involved in anything from analysing data, organising shipping operations and reporting daily profit and loss, to directly supporting the traders, while always looking to optimise BP’s performance and ensuring our global customers receive a safe, controlled supply of energy products.

Development opportunities

At BP, you’ll combine formal training with valuable on-the-job experience — the very best way to learn.

On this graduate programme, the combination of continual training and three rotations of 12 months will expose you to one of the most dynamic sectors, and help you to develop skills and knowledge in a variety of commercial roles. Aside from crude oil and natural gas, the commodities we trade include refined products, chemicals, blending components, natural gas liquids (NGLs), foreign exchange, long and short term debt, interest rates, precious metals, biofuels, carbon credits, power and more besides. Graduates are placed in roles that span the entire spectrum of what we trade and each role in the rotation will allow you to make a tangible contribution to BP’s performance, while allowing you to develop your technical and individual skills. You may find yourself placed in a team that sets strategy, tracks the market, or manages foreign exchange, or you may be a trading operator responsible for the logistical success of a trading deal. Trading

Overview

BP is one of the largest physical traders of oil and gas in the world with a huge array of assets, including refineries, ships, tanks and retail systems. Supply and trading is the market-facing component of our trading activities. It combines all our oil, gas, power and chemical trading activities, and has a dedicated financial markets trading team that manages our daily exposure to global currency and interest rate fluctuations.

We work with other energy companies, financial institutions, such as investment banks and hedge funds, as well as companies looking to reduce their exposure to the risks of changing oil prices. BP’s global trading activity generates a huge amount of information that other companies, without access to physical assets, simply do not have. This gives us a substantive advantage in converting such information into effective market calls. So, if you have passion, ambition and enthusiasm, why not pursue your goals with a business at the cutting edge of trading and explore your opportunities within supply and trading?
