A day in the life: Interns

Internships are a fantastic opportunity to learn about BP and the nature of our work. Click on the tabs below to find out more about our interns in our Downstream, Upstream, Trading and Corporate functions.

As a commercial analyst in the commercial team, my responsibilities include producing market reports, maintaining utilities demand and usages forecasts, and generating monthly invoices. I also assist with a variety of projects, as per business needs. My typical day involves capturing data from specialist sites, researching on industry trends, and optimising current processes. I enjoy the flexibility and independence of my role. It allows me to work on projects beyond my core responsibilities, and meet people from different disciplines. This gives me greater insight into BP as a business.

I am a process engineering intern based in Leatherhead working on the Shah Deniz 2 project (Azerbaijan). My involvement includes a variety of sub-projects primarily focusing on the Sangachal onshore processing terminal. My days are never the same, but typically involve some calculations and computer modelling. There are lots of different challenges to face and opportunities to learn! My favourite things about the internship are being part of a project of such scale, as well as also being involved in organising lunch and learns, which give you an insight into what others in the company do.

During my time in information technology and support (IT&S), I have been working on the North American Crude scheduling project within the Operators Workbench project, Operations Program (OWB), as a software developer. My work involves developing the applications released to the operators to help them make and follow trades much more efficiently. This involves combining good knowledge of the business with technical software development, in order to translate the user’s needs into software requirements. My favourite part of the role is the feeling of real contribution I have to the team and to the business.

I work in Upstream resourcing on the experienced external hires team. My team works with hiring managers in Upstream to source and recruit people externally. In addition to helping interview and source these candidates, I spend my time on my research project. The project aims to identify the key characteristics and experiences that a ‘good’ candidate for BP possesses, using both quantitative and qualitative research. My favourite thing about the role is the responsibility and flexibility I am given, as well as being able to work  with some great people.
