What we do

Bochum is home to BP Europa SE's state of the art offices and one of BP's global fuels technology centres. Spanning more than 100 years the history of BP in Germany is characterized by remarkable structural change. The former oil company has developed into an innovative supplier of cutting-edge fuels and biofuels, of lubricants and petrochemical products.

Germany is the largest market for fuels in Europe and the fourth largest in the world. BP in Germany has some 2,500 Aral-branded filling stations, giving us a significant share of the market. Every day, more than 2 million customers visit our service stations and shops. In 2013, there were more than 1 million fuel cards in circulation and our Petit Bistro brand is one of the leading fast food provider and sells more Coffee-to-Go than anyone else in Germany.

BP, however, goes beyond that: we operate one of the largest refinery systems in Germany which relies on sophisticated technology to produce sulphur-free fuels and other high-quality mineral oil products. BP’s brand Castrol also guarantee the company a leading position in the lubricants business, in which it is represented in all key segments of the market. Additionally BP operates the largest number of natural gas stations in Germany and is among the leading suppliers of LPG, jet and marine fuels as well as bitumen in Germany.

Our people and partners

We employ about 4,800 people from right across Germany. Most of them come from the state of Northrhine-Westphalia and work at our sites in Bochum, Gelsenkirchen and Mönchengladbach. A significant number of our staff also works in Hamburg and in Lingen (Lower Saxony).

Work at BP in Germany is diverse and progressive. Through our innovative working practices, we offer flexible working time arrangements (part time, home office and sabbaticals) to enable employees find their own and individual work-life-balance.

Community investment

BP’s community initiatives in Germany range from social investment to emissions control and energy management.

Our "Seitenwechsel" programme gives our senior managers the opportunity to develop their social skills and also raise their awareness of social issues. They might spend a week working in areas such as drug counseling, refugee support or children's hospices.

We also encourage our staff to make donations or help with charitable work. Our matching fund programme equals employees’ charitable donations, up to €3,650 per person per year. In partnership with "Bundesnetzwerk Bürgerschaftliches Engagement", BP launched the "Civil Academy" to train young people with good ideas for civil engagement. We share our business knowledge and practical experiences in areas such as project management, communication and financing. This is our contribution to capacity building of the civil society.

Another initiative is our engagement with schools in Germany. We co-operate with several schools at our sites and support teachers and pupils with teaching material, lectures and site visits.

The Deutsche BP Foundation actively supports a range of projects that help young people, many of them disadvantaged, to find career training and employment. Established in 1998 as the Aral Foundation, the Deutsche BP Foundation collaborates with schools, municipalities, job centres, local companies and chambers of commerce and industry.
