What we do

First, a little history. BP New Zealand opened its doors for business back in 1946. In those days we sold just fuels and lubricants and then some years later we expanded into convenience stores.

Today BP New Zealand is the largest shareholder of New Zealand's only oil refinery and has a 25% stake in a coastal shipping company. We also have investments in 10 fuel terminals around New Zealand, some of which we jointly manage with other oil companies.

We are one of the largest suppliers in lubricants and retail fuels. We have over 200 service stations of which around a third are company owned and the remainder are independent.

Our people and partners

We employ 1,700 people throughout the country at our head office (Wellington), regional offices and company operated service stations.

Community investment

BP NZ provides funding for Inflatable rescue boats used by Surf Life Saving in New Zealand.

These Inflatable boats are used in over 50% of rescues performed by Surf Life Saving NZ.

This relationship has been running for over 40 years and is believed to be New Zealand’s longest running sponsorship.

As most New Zealanders live within an hour’s drive of our coastline, the beach is a big part of New Zealand culture.

The BP Challenge takes place annually with around 10,000 New Zealand school children taking part. It encourages the children to find solutions to problems using everyday items and a bit of innovative thinking. It’s one of New Zealand’s most well known education sponsorships.

Our Enterprise Studies programme invites secondary school students to develop a business activity for a community organization and then sell their goods or services at a market day. Around 8,000 students graduate from the programme every year, giving them a greater understanding of business and enterprise.
