What we do

We provide customers with fuel for transport, energy for heat and light, lubricants to keep engines moving and the petrochemicals products used to make everyday items as diverse as paints, clothes and packaging

Business model

Our diverse portfolio is balanced across businesses, resource types and geographies. Having upstream and downstream businesses, along with well-established trading capabilities, helps to mitigate the impact of lower oil and gas prices. Our geographic reach gives us access to growing markets and new resources, as well as diversifying exposure to geopolitical events.

Upstream and Downstream

Through our two main operating segments, Upstream and Downstream, we find, develop and produce essential sources of energy, turning them into products that people need.

The Upstream segment is responsible for our activities in oil and natural gas exploration, field development and production, as well as midstream transportation, storage and processing.

The Downstream segment has global manufacturing and marketing operations. It is the product and service-led arm of BP, made up of three businesses: fuels, lubricants and petrochemicals.

Global energy trading

The supply and trading business is the commercial face of BP, and the people and systems within it work closely with our Upstream and Downstream businesses.
