Recruitment processes FAQ

Applying for a job

What happens to my application after I have submitted it?

You will receive an immediate email confirmation that your application has been received along with details of your reference number. Within two days of sending your online application, you will receive an email confirming whether or not you meet our initial criteria for the specific job you applied for.

If your application meets our initial criteria, you will progress to the next stage of our selection process. You will then be contacted by email or telephone by one of our recruiters to discuss the next steps in selection – likely to include confirmation on whether you have been short-listed for an interview, interviews and verification processes. Your profile will also be retained in our recruiting database for possible matches against future open positions.

We will keep in touch with you regularly so that you fully understand your status for the specific position for which you are being considered.

If your application does not meet our initial criteria, you will not be considered further for that specific job. However, your profile will be kept in our recruiting database. If a match should occur between your profile and future open positions, you will be notified by email and invited to return to our website to apply.

If I receive an email saying that I am not being considered for a job, can I be reconsidered?

As part of the online application process you will have answered questions to determine whether you meet the minimum requirements or essential criteria described in the job description. If you do not meet the minimum requirements for a specific job, you will not be considered for the job. However, we encourage you to continue to review jobs that match your profile and apply to those you are interested in and where your qualifications match the requirements described in the job description.

What sort of questions will I be asked during the application process, and how will my answers be used?

In the course of your application to BP we will request responses to specific questions. Some are to match your skills and qualifications with the role and others are to ensure we comply with applicable laws and BP's business policies. You may also be asked a set of anti-corruption questions, more information on these are available via the link below. Should you be successful in your application to BP your responses to key questions will be verified.

Why am I being asked anti-corruption questions?

BP is an equal opportunities employer which strives to follow fair and transparent recruitment processes. For example, BP will not give preference to particular candidates for employment as a means of influencing anyone in the private or public sectors, including government officials, to make decisions favourable to BP.

In order to gather necessary background information as part of our recruitment process, BP has introduced the practice of asking the following questions of all candidates for employment. The availability of this information will contribute to the transparency of the recruitment process and ensure that employees are not placed in positions where they may have substantial conflicts of interest or which may give rise to the appearance of impropriety.

What happens if I disclose a link to a government official?

Prior to being offered a role with BP, we will assess the situation based on the facts provided and will advise whether further information is needed and/or what compliance safeguards are required to appropriately manage the situation.

What is a government official?

A ‘government official’ is any of the following:

  • elected or appointed government or foreign officials

  • any employee, officer, or director of a government instrumentality
  • political parties and their officials and candidates for political office
  • any other person who acts in any official capacity
  • members of the military, police, customs and other enforcement/security services

If there is any uncertainty as to whether there is a relationship or the person is an official, the details should be declared.

What is a close relative?

'Close relative' means a spouse, partner, parent, step-parent, child, step-child, sibling, step-sibling, nephew, niece, aunt, uncle, grandparent, grandchild and in-law.

Speculative applications

Can I submit my resume/CV without applying for a specific position?

You may submit your resume/CV speculatively in the system as our recruiters will search for candidates in our database; however, you stand a much better chance of being considered for a role at BP if you apply to a specific role that matches your skills and experience.

Do you accept applications by mail?

We prefer candidates to apply for roles online. However, if you are unable to do so via our system, for example because you are using assistive technologies, please write to us and we will advise you of what to do next. You can use our 'Contact us' page to find your local office address:

Having problems?

I’m having problems uploading a Word document containing tables, what am I doing wrong?

If you are uploading a Resume/CV or attachment in MS Word format which contains tables, this may cause the file upload process to fail. In this instance, you should either convert your file to PDF format and re-upload, or convert the table data in the MS Word document to plain text.

I did not receive a confirmation email after submitting an application for a job. What should I do?

After submitting your application to a job you should receive an email confirming that your application has been received. It may take up to 48 hours for you to receive this message. If, after 48 hours, you have still not received the email confirmation:

  • check that you submitted to the job using the correct email address and that
  • there were no misspellings
  • check your junk email or spam email folder in case it has been misdirected there
Who can I contact if I’m having problems?
