To deliver sustained high performance, we recognize that we need to treat ‘how’ we do business as importantly as ‘what’ we do
Our values – safety, respect, excellence, courage and one team – are a core part of the ‘how.’ We are working to bring them to life in our people’s day-to-day behaviour.
Embedding our values
These values were set out by BP’s leadership team in 2011 and are now being embedded into our group-wide systems and processes, including our recruitment, promotion and development assessments.
Our values, and the behaviours we expect from our employees, are central to our individual performance management process. They are reinforced by our remuneration structure, which connects how individuals are rewarded with how we work at a group, team and individual level.
We have a network of ‘change agents’ across the company who support team leaders in rolling out our values. These employees volunteer to act as advocates, encouraging their colleagues to talk about values through informal conversations, workshops and team meetings. Some of them also help to deliver training across the company.
Recognizing our employees
One of the ways we recognize employees who have displayed exceptional behaviour that reflects BP’s values, is through our internal award programmes – Helios and Team BP. We also encourage other informal methods of embedding our values across the company.
Ideas for improving safety reporting are rewarded
Akash Hanooman, investigation and learning coordinator in Trinidad & Tobago, recognized that future accidents can be prevented by improving the way near misses are reported and investigated. He taught colleagues how to report near misses in ways that are more clearly actionable and can then be more easily followed up. Creating an open environment that stresses the positive benefits in reporting potential hazards is his aim. Akash’s efforts have helped to improve safety, and helped his colleagues further embrace a safety culture. As Akash says: “A hazard identified on time today may save the life of a co-worker tomorrow.” Akash was named a Team BP winner in 2012.
