About BP in the North Sea

About BP in the North Sea

Since the mid-1960s, BP has been a leading operator in the North Sea. We have the largest asset base in the area and a diverse upstream portfolio that includes over 30 fields, ten pipeline systems and five onshore oil and gas terminals.

Our operations help safeguard the flow of oil and gas into the UK. We've also recently completed modern new business headquarters that reflect our commitment to the region and our investment in its future. We're proud of what we have achieved, and of the people whose energy and determination continue to drive our progress. Our focus is on delivering safe and reliable operations that contribute to the success of the region. We are responsible and we're here for the long term. BP's North Sea projects cover the complete exploration, development and production life-cycle. And as a global centre of excellence, we're committed to long-term productivity and success in the North Sea.

Increasing investment

Right now, BP's investment in the North Sea is at its highest level for more than ten years. Last year, our investment reached £1.5 billion and over the next five years it will reach £10bn. We have four major new field development projects underway in the UK and two more in Norway. We’ve also been awarded seven new exploration licenses. From established fields to new assets, we’re focused on innovation and growth.

We have a number of major projects ongoing which will ensure continued opportunities for jobs for the future. The £4.5 billion Clair Ridge project is the second phase of development of the giant Clair field west of the Shetland Islands. The project, which will install two new bridge-linked platforms to access an estimated 640 million barrels of oil and gas, is planned to come on stream in 2016 and will extend the production from the greater Clair area to 2050. Earlier in 2010, BP and its partners also announced plans for the £3 billion redevelopment of the Schiehallion and Loyal fields, west of Shetland, and the £700 million development of the Kinnoull field in the central North Sea. Good progress is also being made with the £550 million development of the Devenick gas field.

We are also constantly reviewing ways to extend the life of field of our existing fields and assets and we anticipate that over 50% of our assets will produce beyond their original design life.

More people

We're investing in new projects, established assets and people with the talent, drive and energy to play a part in developing secure sources of energy for the UK. People who work in the North Sea region have opportunities to learn and build skills that are vital to the success of energy projects across our entire organisation. The North Sea could be the first stage of a career that will take you to world-class projects everywhere BP operates. We have a remarkable future and so do the talented people who join us here. .
