“My entire career has been spent in safety and operations. I have a passion for doing the right thing, so S&OR is exactly where I want to be. My degree is in Chemical Engineering and I earned my PhD in Thermodynamics. In the central team, we determine the strategy and policies that have a big impact on other people in BP – and the way they do their jobs. Working here gives you a great vantage point. We have a role across the whole business – upstream and downstream. It’s an extraordinary way to see more of a global organisation and S&OR is at the centre of it all. In my role, I can’t afford to compromise on any of my professional conclusions. I won’t change the science to fit in with a budget. And that’s something we can’t ever afford to forget. But by talking to experts and working collaboratively, we can reach solutions that are sustainable in every way. We always keep the long term in mind. Of course BP is a business, so we have to work within limits. I see myself as a custodian of expertise – which takes integrity and a professional commitment to safety. S&OR is about finding the best balance – one that delivers what the business needs safely and with the least risk. Technical expertise is very important to that aim. In fact, it’s paramount. ”
