BP has proudly supported arts and culture in the UK for more than 30 years.
Over this time we have developed long-term partnerships with internationally renowned institutions: the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Opera House and Tate Britain. Recently, BP has renewed its partnerships for the next five years with an investment of nearly £10 million. This sum ensures that new performances, special events, exhibitions, awards, grants, lectures and access to works of art can continue to reach an ever-growing audience.
British Museum
BP is the British Museum's most longstanding partner, supporting the Museum's public programme on an annual basis since 1996.
Over the course of 16 years, BP has supported numerous special exhibitions, most recently the hugely successful Shakespeare: Staging the World and Fra Angelico to Leonardo: Italian Renaissance Drawings. These and other exhibitions have enabled over one million visitors to explore important topics including the cultures of ancient Iran, the empire of Hadrian, the workmanship of Michelangelo and ancient Egyptian mummification. BP has also supported special public events at the British Museum around Chinese New Year and the Mexican Day of the Dead in which over 70,000 people participated.
National Portrait Gallery
BP is the most enduring supporter of the National Portrait Gallery.
The Gallery's annual BP Portrait Award, now in its 24th year of sponsorship by BP, is the world's most prestigious competition of its kind. Promoting the very best in contemporary portrait painting, the BP Portrait Award has launched the careers of many highly successful portrait artists. In 2013, the winner of the first prize will receive an increased award of £30,000. The exhibition will tour from London to Aberdeen and, in 2014, on to Wolverhampton.
The connected BP Travel Award has given artists the opportunity to work on portraiture projects in a range of different environments, while the BP Young Artist Award has put a spotlight on highly talented youthful artists. In 2012, the BP Portrait Award attracted 2,187 entries from artists in 75 countries. In London and Edinburgh, over 315,000 visitors came to see the 55 selected paintings.
BP Portrait Award: Next Generation is an exciting project creating free opportunities for 14-19 year olds to engage with portraiture. Launched in 2010 as part of BP's contribution to the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, the programme is continuing beyond the Games, providing a permanent artistic legacy by encouraging young artists of the future.
Royal Opera House
BP and the Royal Opera House began working together in 1988, making this the House's longest-standing corporate partnership.
For the last eleven years, BP has supported the free Big Screen live relays of opera and ballet performances direct from Covent Garden to an increasing number of sites across the country. As a result, many more people can now experience the very best of opera and ballet in their home town.
Tate Britain
Having worked with Tate Britain since 1990, BP is the gallery's oldest corporate partner.
BP's support enables Tate Britain to create a broad and dynamic programme of exhibitions and events. The highlight is the important BP British Art Displays. In May 2013, the exhibition Walk Through British Art will show a complete chronological re-hang of the collection - from 1500 to the present - in the newly refurbished galleries. The BP programme also includes BP Saturdays - free festival events at Tate Britain exploring British art for all ages - and the BP British Art Lecture which in 2012 was given by the pioneering artist and academic, Phyllida Barlow. Previous speakers have included political columnist, writer and broadcaster Andrew Marr and BAFTA winning British playwright and television dramatist, Stephen Poliakoff CBE.
Our UK Education programme was founded in 1968 with a clear aim: to inspire young people. This founding principle continues to encourage and energise every generation; helping them gain a better understanding of business leadership, the energy industry and the environment.
BP Educational Service (BPES)
The BP Educational Service (BPES) is a key part of our Education Programme. The offering has evolved over the years, responding to the changing needs of teachers and schools. Developed by teachers and educational specialists, the BPES produces and distributes educational resource packs and responds to enquiries from students, teachers and the general public on all aspects of the energy industry.
Schools Link
BP supports schools throughout the UK through our Schools Link programme, linking with local schools, mentoring pupils, enabling employees to act as school governors and providing work experience placements.
Project ENTHUSE
BP is a founder partner in Project ENTHUSE, a joint initiative with the Government and The Wellcome Trust to deliver continuing professional development for science teachers in maintained schools.
Enterprising Science
Our Enterprising Science initiative was launched in 2007 and is designed to inspire learning and teaching within science and maths subjects in secondary schools. One exciting facet of the initiative is the 'BP Trading Challenge' - a workshop run in schools by specially trained BP facilitators. This high-impact activity involves fast-paced sessions where students trade oil, react to market news and manage budgets - whilst developing teamwork, decision-making and communication skills.
Science Museum
One of our most significant partnerships is with the Science Museum, which has been running since 2003. Our support led to the creation of the award-winning 'Energy - Fuelling the Future' gallery and website, designed to help young people understand how energy affects their lives.
We have been supporting the Talk Science programme since 2007 - an inspirational training course for secondary science teachers, created and delivered by the Science Museum. Delivered across the UK, the programme shares innovative tools and techniques to engage and inspire discussion in the classroom around contemporary science.
Engineering Development Trust
BP works closely with the Engineering Development Trust on their Go4SET programme and Engineering Education Scheme. They provide 13-19 year olds with experience and inspire them to further explore science. We were also the founding sponsor of the Engineering Development Trust Scotland.
CREST Awards
BP is proud to support the British Science Association's CREST (CREativity in Science and Technology) awards, the leading UK science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) award scheme for young people. The awards support young people aged 11-19 as they explore the real nature of STEM through exciting and innovative investigative learning projects.
Royal Academy of Engineering and the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering
BP works alongside The Royal Academy of Engineering to develop new generations of engineering talent and we are delighted to be a founding supporter of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering. This new global award celebrates truly outstanding advances that have created a significant benefit to humanity.
Support from BP has allowed The Royal Academy of Engineering to launch the Engineering Further Education programme, which supports teaching and learning in further education colleges. A new e-mentoring programme called 'Bright Links Engineering' has also been developed, which links students with practising engineers from industry. Contextualised maths resources to support teaching and learning have also been developed for this programme by the Mathematics in Education and Industry organisation.
We passionately believe in supporting activities that strengthen the skills and abilities of people and community groups to take effective action in the development of their communities.
Enterprise
BP is working with Business in the Community in support of the 'arc' initiative. This is designed to create 1,000 new jobs in East London.
Mentoring and coaching
We support a range of mentoring and coaching programmes to enhance the skills and confidence of people in our local communities.
Environment
Through our long-standing investment in the Scottish Forest Alliance, we have supported local people by planning new woodlands and planting trees. The Alliance continues to support rural jobs, helping to strengthen the fabric of often remote communities.
Matched giving
Through the BP Foundation, our employees are able to access matching funds for time spent on charitable activities and for donations and gifts to good causes.
