As Head of Technology, I’m accountable for technology strategy and its implementation across BP and conducting research and development that will renew BP’s business. I oversee the technological capability of the company and sit on the UK Energy Technologies Institute and Science Business Innovation Boards.
What did you do before this?
I joined BP in 1982 from Cambridge University with an Engineering degree. During my early career, I held a number of Petroleum Engineering, Commercial and Business Management positions before becoming General Manager of BP’s North West Shelf interest in Australia in 1996.
As well as spells managing Wytch Farm in the UK and BP’s Gas Businesses in Trinidad I worked in the Chief Executive’s Office in the company’s London headquarters, and after that was Vice President of Deepwater Developments in the Gulf of Mexico.
Most recently, I was BP’s Exploration and Production Group Vice President for Technology, responsible for Research and Development, Technical Service Work, Digital and Communications Technology, Procurement and Supply Chain Management, and Petrotechnical Learning for BP’s Upstream business.
What keeps you at BP and why should great talent join BP?
The energy industry integrates a broader array of science and technologies than almost any other sector, including defence and aerospace. It has extraordinary technical breadth, depth and multi-disciplinarity. I have worked for BP for over 30 years and would make the same career choices all over again. The company’s values resonate with me, and I enjoy working with my colleagues.
What makes you proud of BP?
We try to do the right thing, irrespective of the circumstances.
