BP First to Provide Hydrogen at Existing Filling Station

Release date: 19 May 2004
BP today announced that it has added fuelling facilities to provide hydrogen – the clean transport fuel – on a trial basis at one of its Singapore retail filling stations. This makes BP the first company in the world to provide the environmentally friendly fuel at an existing retail site, alongside conventional fuels.

The pilot project, with support from the Economic Development Board of Singapore, is part of a two-year test-bedding project to evaluate the possible application of hydrogen fuel cell technology and infrastructure for transport across the world. It has received its “Certificate of Statutory Completion ” to operate and is due to fill up its first cars shortly.

Mike Jones, BP’s Hydrogen General Manager, said: “This is a major milestone for the evaluation and potential development of hydrogen as a transport fuel.”
“For the first time, members of the public will be able to see customers filling up with hydrogen at a conventional filling station. This will enhance awareness of the benefits of hydrogen and allow customers to become familiar with using it within an existing retail site. We are grateful to the Singapore authorities for their open and constructive approach which has enabled us to develop the project on schedule,” said Mr Jones

The hydrogen refuelling facility has capacity to dispense 70 kilograms of hydrogen per day, enough to fuel 35 cars. Initially, it will provide fuel to six cars supplied by DaimlerChrysler.

BP is currently assessing options for a possible second station in Singapore before the end of 2004.

Notes to Editors

  • The Singapore hydrogen station has been developed as the inaugural project under the Singapore Initiative in Energy Technology (SINERGY) programme. SINERGY is part of the Government’s effort to promote research and development and test-bedding activities in the area of clean energy for both automotive and stationary power applications. It is also done with close co-operation with Daimler-Chrysler.
  • BP is supporting hydrogen fuel cell bus trials in five of the nine Clean Urban Transport for Europe (CUTE) projects in Europe and has recently announced its participation in further hydrogen refuelling demonstrations projects in the USA and the People’s Republic of China.
  • The BP Singapore station is located in the urban east area – at Upper East Coast Road. The hydrogen will be produced at the local, Jurong Island refinery, from natural gas.
  • In January this year, BP announced that it is divesting its Singapore retail marketing business comprising 30 stations. This divestment will have no adverse impact on the hydrogen demonstration re-fuelling project. Plans are in place to ensure that the hydrogen project will continue on track post-divestment.
