On March 19th 1899, Charles 'Cheers' Wakefield set up an oil company in England. Ten years later, he produced a new lubricant that would revolutionize transport in the first half of the Twentieth Century. He called the new oil Castrol. And so a name was born that to this day is synonymous with premium quality, high performance and leading edge technology in lubrication.
In 1920s, Castrol 'R' helps flight pioneers Alcock and Brown for their first non-stop flight across the Atlantic. In 1935, Detergent-based 'Patent Castrol' for cleaner engines appeared. In 1953, the first semi-synthetic racing motor oil, Castrol R20, is developed in partnership with Mercedes Benz… Castrol's founder Charles Wakefield was always keen to show how Castrol products would perform when pushed to extremes and it's an ethos which still rings true today. From Formula 1 to WRC, from WTCC to DTM, the same red, white and green colors have competing for honors. To date, Castrol helped set land speed records 21 times. To recall a most recent one, in 1997, Andy Green in Thrust SSC sets a new World Land Speed Record at 763.032 mph (1227.98 kph), faster than the speed of sound.
