BP completes $A170 million investment in refinery facilities.
WA Premier Hon. Colin Barnett officially launched new facilities at the BP Refinery Kwinana on Friday October 16, in front of an audience of local, State and Federal Government politicians and dignitaries, community members and business leaders.
Refinery staff received a new café and there were significant upgrades to the emergency response control room, staff change house, fire station, medical centre and security gatehouse, replacing the original buildings which had been in use since the refinery was built in the 1950s.
The original administration building was subjected to a two-year revamp while the refinery’s operational heart, the central control building, was expanded and fitted with enhanced safety features.
The new facilities are a small part of an ongoing capital expenditure program that included $100 million in 2008, the majority of which funded an upgrade of a key refining unit to reduce environmental impacts, improve safety and commercial performance.

This year the expenditure was another $70 million and the program will continue in 2010 with another $100 million budgeted to progress significant commercial projects that enhance the refinery’s capacity to produce cleaner fuels.
BP Refinery Kwinana’s General Manager, Thys Heyns, said the investment was just one part of BP’s continuous improvement plan at the refinery, through which BP provides ongoing energy security to WA.
“All of these improvements contribute to ongoing safe and reliable operations,” Mr Heyns said.
“BP is a major energy supplier to WA, supplying around 80% of the State’s fuel requirements for road, rail, air and marine transport, as well as off-grid power generation for the mining sector. The refinery also supplies high octane, premium fuels to South Australia and the Eastern States. Ongoing investment in critical infrastructure ensures we continue to meet this growing demand,” Mr Heyns said.
“Our role as fuel provider for WA is a challenge and responsibility we take very seriously. BP is committed to ongoing investment in new plant and technology.”
