BP proud to receive a Platinum water efficiency award

Release date: 18 April 2012
BP Australia today welcomed a Platinum water efficiency award for a greater than 50 per cent improvement in water efficiency at the Kwinana oil refinery in Perth.

The award, presented by Minister for Environment, Bill Marmion and Water Corporation CEO Sue Murphy, reflects Kwinana refinery’s efforts over the past decade to significantly reduce consumption of drinking quality water in its industrial processes.

Much of the reduction has been achieved by piping highly treated wastewater from the Water Corporation’s Kwinana Water Recycling Plant (KWRP) plant to the refinery for industrial processes, such as steam generation and cooling.

Switching to recycled water allowed nearly 2 gigalitres, or 800 Olympic size swimming pools of potable water each year, to be diverted to domestic consumption.

BP Kwinana Refinery managing director, Des Gillen, said that some $13 million had been invested to reduce the refinery’s use of drinking water for industrial purposes.

In the mid 1990s BP drew 7 megalitres a day from town scheme water resources for industrial uses. Through a series of water reduction programs that amount has been reduced and today we use about 10 per cent of our mid 1990’s requirements.”

Gillen concluded; “BP is committed to continually improving its environmental performance and everyone at the refinery should be proud that our efforts have been recognised.”

Notes to editors:

BP’s Kwinana refinery is West Australia’s only oil refinery. The refinery supplies eighty per cent of West Australia’s liquid fuel needs and also exports products to other Australian states and New Zealand.

The refinery’s Environmental Management System has been ISO 14001 accredited since 1999 and the results of the ISO 14001 audit process are published every two years. The most recent Kwinana Refinery Public Environmental Report can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/PER-BP-Kwinana-2009
