Cleaning up the Cape

The Fairest Cape Association’s vision is of a clean, healthy and sustainable Cape Metropolitan area in which everyone demonstrates pride, ownership and respect for the environment. The Association is an independent, non-profit organisation working with communities, educational institutions, businesses and local authorities in the Cape Metropolitan area. The FCA’s key task is to create public awareness of the consequences of poorly managed waste and the benefits of integrated waste management. It does this through: public awareness; education and training; and the facilitation and building of partnerships.
The Cleaner Caring Campaign is an annual high profile, anti-litter awareness and education campaign run by the FCA. The campaign runs during the festive season from the beginning of December to mid January in partnership with the City of Cape Town and supported by BP Southern Africa, Cape Argus and Good Hope FM. The campaign’s mascot is a penguin named Pikkie and the slogan for the campaign is ‘Pick Up for Pikkie - for a Cleaner, Caring Cape.
Teams of students, who form ‘Pikkie’s Patrol’ each with their own Pikkie mascot, travel to the beaches on the False Bay and Atlantic coasts taking a fun and educational message to the public over the peak holiday season. They join forces to carry the ‘pick up litter’ message to holidaymakers.
