BP in Canada

Workers at Whitecourt, Canada
BP’s business is based on the pillars of being a progressive, responsible, innovative and performance-driven operator
In Canada, our success comes from the enthusiasm and dedication of our staff, comprising well over 1000 employees. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, we are active in four provinces and the Northwest Territories, while our marketing and trading activities span the nation and expand into the US.
Our goal is to have a positive influence in the areas where we operate and we are dedicated to playing an active role in these communities. Our community investment program revolves around education, environment and community.
In our operating areas, we believe communication and engagement with our stakeholders are the cornerstones of a sustainable business. We value public input in order to improve our project planning and operations.

What we do

BP Canada explores for, develops, produces and processes natural gas. We also market natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGL). Through our Western Canadian facilities, we produce over 300 million cubic feet of natural gas and trade over 130,000 barrels of NGL each day.
We rank among Canada’s top marketers and traders of natural gas and are a major purchaser of Canadian crude oil for BP’s refineries in the United States. Our marketing and trading activities optimize and manage the flow of commodities from upstream production to market, and utilize our entrepreneurial trading skills to generate additional value.
Our major assets include fractionation plants at Fort Saskatchewan, Sarnia and Empress. With a capacity of 4.6 billion cubic feet per day, BP Empress is one of the largest gas processing plants in North America showing that our roots in Canada are substantial.
We are currently constructing what will be our largest single source of production; the Noel Major Project in northeast British Columbia is expected to produce 130 million cubic feet of gas per day at peak production, increasing BP Canada’s total production by 30 per cent. In 2010, Noel was honoured with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers’ President’s Award for setting a new industry standard in health and safety, environmental and social responsibility.
As we move forward, BP is committed to exploring a diverse portfolio of new opportunities in order to meet future demand for reliable energy.
Canadian oil sands: Our oil sands portfolio includes the following opportunities, suitable for in situ development using steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) technology.
  • A joint venture with Husky Energy to develop the Sunrise oil sands lease in the northeastern Athabasca region of Alberta.
  • A joint venture with Devon Energy to develop the Kirby oil sands lease in the southern Alberta region of the Athabasca oil sands deposit.
  • A partnership with Value Creation Inc. to develop the Terre de Grace oil sands lease in the northwestern Athabasca Region of Alberta.
The resource potential of these projects will provide a secure source of oil supply to consumers in North America. We recognize that oil sands projects raise environmental challenges and we are actively seeking ways to undertake these projects in a way that minimizes the environmental footprint.
Mist Mountain Coalbed Gas Project: We are assessing whether natural gas in British Columbia’s Crowsnest Coalfield can be produced in a safe, economic and environmentally responsible manner. Our proposal includes up to five years of environmental studies, technical research and consultation prior to a decision on commercial development.

Canadian Beaufort Sea exploration: BP Exploration Company Limited acquired three offshore exploration licences totalling over 6,000 square kilometres in the Canadian Beaufort Sea. The Pokak 3D Seismic Program will help BP Exploration Company Limited determine if there are commercial quantities of oil or gas resources under the ocean floor.
