Wide range of makes and models
BP Ultimate fuels have been developed as part of an ongoing testing programme. In order to prove the benefits of BP Ultimate, long term fleet tests have been conducted using a wide range of vehicles of various makes and model types, including small and large engine capacities, and both older vehicles and the latest models.
The testing protocol was carefully developed to be representative of motorists switching from ordinary fuels to BP Ultimate. Tests are also conducted on brand new cars using BP Ultimate from the start. Independent UK laboratories including Ricardo Consulting Engineers and Millbrook carry out the majority of the tests. Testing is also carried out in BP's own facilities in the UK and Germany.
Because the loss in performance from using ordinary fuels can be a gradual process, and correspondingly the performance benefits of using BP Ultimate can increase with time, vehicle fleet testing is conducted over significant mileages. Overall our test programmes evaluate the benefits of BP Ultimate in many different areas of vehicle performance, including engine cleanliness, power, acceleration, fuel economy, and exhaust emissions using industry standard tests.
In a typical test, a vehicle starts the test with a clean engine, is operated for several thousand miles on ordinary fuel and its performance is then measured. This demonstrates how performance declines as deposits build up in the engine. Then the vehicle is switched to BP Ultimate and the performance is measured again to show the immediate benefits of using BP Ultimate. We then continue to run the vehicles - in many cases for another 10,000 miles - to see how the benefits of using BP Ultimate can grow with time.
