BP in Belgium
100 years after we first arrived in Belgium, we’re looking forward to a very exciting future
What we do
Belgium has been part of the BP story since 1909. Today BP Belgium focuses mainly on producing chemicals, but we’re also involved in lubricants blending and marketing, as well supplying products for the fuels, LPG, marine and aviation markets. The City of Geel is home to our chemicals plant. It generates a total annual production of around 2 million tonnes. The products we create here are purified isophtalic acid (PIA), purified terephtalic acid (PTA), the raw material for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, and paraxylene, the raw material for PTA.
We also produce BP lubricants at our two other sites: Ghent, where we produce and ship 120,000 tonnes of automotive lubricants, and Antwerp, where our blending plant produces 130,000 tonnes of lubricants a year. This figure is made 80% from marine lubricants and 20% from antifreeze and car lubricants.
Antwerp is also where you’ll find our marketing and sales office. Here lubricants and fuels for marine, aviation, transport, agriculture, inland waterways and workshops are introduced to the marketplace. BP and Castrol are the names already available.
Our people and partners
Of our 750 employees in Belgium, 95% are local people. In Geel we employ 430 people, in Ghent 180 and in Antwerp 190 – of which two third based in the blending plants (GSC) and the rest in sales and marketing and other business & functions, exclusive temporary staff.
Community investment
In Belgium, as in the rest of the world, we aim to ensure that our work respects the many people, organizations and environments our business touches.Through social investment projects we can play a part in the community. We invest in local schools and other educational institutions, like those in Geel for example.
