BP is committed to working with the communities where we operate to help improve the quality of life of their inhabitants. Mexico is no exception.BP Mexico is involved in a number of projects in the fields of education, entrepreneurship and the environment that contribute to making life better for many Mexicans. In recent years we have focused especially on educational programmes that offer young Mexicans the opportunity to advance personally, become leaders, and contribute to greater progress for Mexico.
During the past two years we have funded scholarships for more than 50 students.
- At the graduate level, we provide scholarships thru the UK Government’s prestigious Chevening programme for studies at the best British universities.
- For secondary school students we provide life-changing two-year scholarships to study at one of eight United World Colleges located worldwide.
- We also fund scholarships for English-language teacher training courses thru the Anglo-Mexican Foundation, resulting in a multiplier effect of hundreds of students acquiring better English language skills.
- We support the bi-national charitable organization, Amistad Británico-Mexicana, which provides educational equipment and materials to primary, secondary and technical schools throughout Mexico.
In the past, BP has been the principal supporter of JEMAC - Jóvenes Empresarios de México, an affiliate of the Prince of Wales Trust-backed Youth Business International. The programme identifies aspiring young entrepreneurs whose business ideas have the potential to succeed with the help of professional mentoring and financial backing. BP executives have mentored dozens of young Mexicans as part of our contribution.
One of BP's most ambitious projects has involved the conservation and creation of artificial reefs off the northwest coast of Mexico's famed Yucatán peninsula. The multi-year project has rendered the creation of new flora and fauna-rich reefs along an area of 125 km and has begun to transform the nearby local economies from subsistence fishing to now include sustainable eco-tourism.
In other areas, BP supported the construction of the Cancer Center at Mexico City’s ABC Medical Center – a leading health facility that provides top-of-the-line healthcare services to economically disadvantaged families as part of its community outreach programme.
