BP in Portugal

After more than 80 years, BP’s operations in Portugal are still going strong

What we do

We opened our first retail site in Portugal more than half a century ago, in 1955. Since then, our network has increased to 345 service stations covering the entire country.

Today, BP Portugal focuses on the marketing and supply of oil products, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and lubricants under the BP and Castrol brands.

We have a strong position in the Portuguese market: in LPG, we have a market share of around 30%; in lubricants, around 22%; in fuels operations around 19% and we also have a significant share of 17% of the general aviation market.

The main objective of our products and services is to improve quality of life. We believe that respect for human rights and the environment is a fundamental commitment. We believe in a new approach and a transparent company, often questioning itself, flexible, diverse and inclusive.

Our people and partners

Our headquarters are in Porto Salvo, Oeiras (20Km from Lisbon), with more offices in Matosinhos (north), Faro (south) and Aveiras (center). We employ a total of 197 people.

Our culture places an emphasis on performance, but we aim to be an example in terms of social responsibility and ethics as well as profits. Since 2001, we’ve been voted one of the 'Best Companies to Work for in Portugal' and in 2004 we achieved first place, according to the Great Place to Work Institute.

Community investment

We’re committed to improving the quality of the environment, being socially responsible and promoting safety.

BP Portugal is one of the founding members of Grupo de Reflexão e Apoio à Cidadania Empresaria (GRACE), a non-profit organization formed in 2002, which is dedicated to corporate social responsibility. GRACE aims to promote the concept of social responsibility and citizenship, to raise awareness among companies and help them manage their businesses in a socially responsible manner, working towards a fair and sustainable society.

BP Portugal established in 2008 a partnership with Refugio Aboim Ascensao. Refugio Aboim Ascensão is a private internationally recognized non-profit Christian Charity organization working to better the lives of abused, abandoned and neglected children under the age of 6. Since 1985 the Refugio has undergone a number of changes in regards to its facilities, socio-legal framework, and clinical and teaching services for children temporarily living at the Refugio. Based on agreements with the `ministries of Social Security, Justice, Health, Education and the Municipality of Faro, the Refugio is now a major center for temporary emergency protection – the first to be created in Portugal for at risk children of both sexes, from newborns to 6 years of age.

We also take part in the Mão-na-Mão project. Together with volunteers from other companies, BP volunteers have taken part in projects with homeless people and children with disabilities.

In the last few years, BP Portugal has developed a partnership with CAIS, a non-profit organization that aims to reintegrate homeless people into the community.
BP Portugal developed a project named, BP Segurança ao Segundo, to increase awareness around Road Safety in Schools. The campaign teaches students what to do if the worst should happen and then challenges them to shape their behaviours as a result of their experiences. The one-day workshop sees the teenagers filming their own road safety videos with professional camera crews and focusing on the five main causes of accidents: not wearing seatbelts, excessive speed, alcohol, tiredness and using a mobile phone. The course is being run across the country and around 2,000 students will be impacted in cities like Porto, Lisbon (capital city), Faro, Abrantes and others. The project aims to have an impact on the number of young lives lost on the roads, as one student says: “We’ll try to change what happens on Portuguese roads in the future.”

Recently BP Portugal established a partnership with Associação Salvador, a private non-profit organization that promotes the integration of people with physical disabilities into society and improves their quality of life. Its activity is diverse and involves projects that respond effectively to the key needs of this specific population. Among its areas of operation, Road Safety is a constant concern, since traffic accidents are the cause of many cases of acquired physical disability.

We’re also helping to keep the forests growing. In 2000, we started collaboration with the Direcção Geral de Florestas to plant 10,000 trees a year.
