Scotland

Bruce Platform, North Sea
Scotland and the UK North Sea have been BP’s home for many decades and we intend this to continue for many more years to come

What we do

BP’s operations in Scotland include oil and gas exploration and production, hydrocarbon transportation and product distribution and marketing.
Oil and gas exploration and production and hydrocarbon transportation
Aberdeen, the energy capital of Europe, is the headquarters for our North Sea exploration and production business – BP’s biggest business in Scotland.

BP has been a leading operator in Aberdeen since the mid 1960’s, when North Sea oil and gas exploration and production began. In 1970, we discovered the two billion barrel Forties oilfield, confirming the North Sea as a globally significant oil and gas province. Since then, BP has continued as a major player, finding and operating numerous oil and gas fields and pipeline systems to bring the hydrocarbons ashore.
Details of all BP operated UK exploration and production assets are available in the BP in Scotland PDF. You can also find full details of all our pipelines and terminals on the North Sea Infrastructure website.
Product distribution and marketing
Our product marketing and distribution businesses include:
  • Retail: we have large network of service stations mainly in the central and eastern areas of Scotland, most of the sites are also BP Connect convienence stores
  • Air BP: a leading supplier of jet fuel to military and general aviation markets, with operations at all major Scottish airports and a number of Scottish islands.
  • BP Marine: which supplies marine fuels and lubricants to the fishing, offshore oil and gas support, and general marine markets in major Scottish ports and island locations.
  • Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG): which provides propane and butane to businesses and homes in Scotland which have no connection to the national grid for natural gas

Our people

We employ some 2,500 people directly in Scotland, including offshore staff and core contractors, and support many more jobs indirectly.

Community investment

BP’s social investment programmes in Scotland focus primarily on enterprise, education and environment and are strongly supported by enthusiastic volunteers from our onshore and offshore staff. We also sponsor a diverse range of exciting arts, sport and charitable activities that have a positive impact across our local communities. Some examples are given below.

My Future’s In Falkirk
In central Scotland, we are a founding partner of the major 10-year ‘My Future’s In Falkirk’ initiative, which aims to grow and diversify the Falkirk economy, create 4250 jobs and stimulate up to £200m of additional investment.
Education
In the education field we are working with around 70 primary and secondary schools on a range of inspirational projects aimed at encouraging young people to develop their practical, analytical and social skills, as well as their knowledge and understanding of science and technology.
Scottish Forest Alliance
As a member of the Scottish Forest Alliance, we are working with Forestry Commission Scotland, Woodland Trust Scotland and RSPB Scotland to regenerate and expand native woodlands in Scotland.
SERPENT
As a founding partner of SERPENT (Scientific and Environmental ROV Partnership using Existing Industrial Technology), we are involved with a globally-acclaimed deep sea project that aims to increase scientific understanding and knowledge of the world’s deepest, darkest marine environments.
