BP U.S. exploration and production overview

BP's Marlin deepwater Gulf of Mexico platform

Offshore and on, BP is one of the largest producers of oil and gas in United States and we're meeting growing American demand for clean-burning fuels.

Today, natural gas makes up more than 40 percent of our U.S. energy product, and BP is the largest producer and supplier in the United States. Our primary U.S. production operations are in Alaska, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Wyoming and the Gulf of Mexico. Our North American Gas group also manages production in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.

We are committing significant capital to bring new gas resources to the North American market, particularly from Alaska and the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, as well as from around the world in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

An important and growing part of BP’s oil and gas production comes from the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, where BP has been a leading operator for 15 years. However, onshore U.S. gas operations are one of the most important businesses in BP, supplying high margin barrels and meeting growing American demand for clean-burning fuels.

Deepwater: beyond the limits

BP is the largest acreage holder in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, owning more than 650 gross blocks in water depths of 1,200 feet or greater. Net production currently exceeds 400 mboed.

Operations there take place at or beyond the limits of industry experience in reservoirs that lie beneath miles of mud, rock and salt topped by more than a mile of ocean. BP's Gulf of Mexico deep wells encounter high pressure and temperatures rarely encountered anywhere else in the world.

This means there are few tried and tested off-the-shelf solutions when it comes to the Gulf’s inherently difficult operational demands.

To meet these challenges, BP relies on the expertise of more than 1,100 employees with diverse backgrounds, all working towards a common goal of making BP the top producer in the region.

Onshore: the $16 billion frontier

BP is one of the largest producers of natural gas in the United States. We supply about 4% of the total U.S. consumption of natural gas, serving a customer base primarily in the commercial and industrial sectors.
To increase U.S. energy supply, BP announced it is investing $2.2 billion investment over the next 15 years to double production in the Wamsutter, Wyo. gas fields – part of a $16 billion, 10-year investment program for BP onshore operations.
The multi-year drilling program in Wamsutter is expected to increase BP's share of ultimate recovery from the field by 450 million barrels of oil equivalent and increase BP's daily net production from 125 to 250 million standard cubic feet per day by the end of the decade.
In all of its onshore operations, BP is committed to continued development of secure U.S. energy supplies and is working with stakeholders and with local, state and federal officials to increase the supply of clean-burning natural gas to U.S. markets.
