Working safely

Fire crew at the Babo airstrip, West Papua, Indonesia
Wherever we operate in the world, whatever project we undertake, we set the same high aspirations for workforce safety: no harm to people and no accidents. BP Indonesia is no exception
The health, safety, security and environmental (HSSE) objectives set out for BP Indonesia mirror BP’s corporate standards and policies. We have stated categorically and publicly that:
  • all personnel at BP Indonesia will be personally responsible and accountable for HSSE performance
  • effective self-regulation processes will be implemented – in compliance with relevant national and international standards, codes and statutory regulations
  • we will take action to minimize waste, emissions and discharges by the efficient use of energy – an effective way to improve workforce health and environmental performance
  • we will manage the risk – conducting regular risk assessments and implementing appropriate controls
  • we will ensure that all personnel involved in the Project are competent to complete the tasks they undertake – through assessment, selection, placement and training
  • we will recognize good and exceptional HSSE performance – encouraging employees to participate in decisions that impact on this vital area
  • we will acknowledge and respond rapidly to stakeholder concerns about HSSE matters
This means that everyone at BP Indonesia including those working on the Tangguh Project will have to complete appropriate safety training, then put this training into action in their working lives. We have already established a process to promote a positive safety culture, establishing a group with responsibility for implementing and developing the Project HSE Management Plan. We will make sure that staff levels are sufficient to review safety issues thoroughly and then take appropriate action in response.

Setting safety standards

In addition, we have established a set of objectives to make sure that BP Indonesia demonstrates leadership to our partners and contractors in safety issues, including safety matters. These set out our intention to:
  • define the standards we expect from contractors
  • make individuals accountable for managing our relationships with contractors
  • conduct Advance Safety Audits and work in progress audits
  • identify specialists to advice and coach when HSSE risks are significant
  • define and agree HSSE measures
  • monitor HSSE performance and participate in site reviews
  • play a leadership role in setting safety standards
  • review HSSE reports with contractors
  • monitor and audit contractors’ compliance with contract and environmental specifications and standards
  • co-ordinate and monitor plans to deal with all emergencies
