Tangguh Biodiversity Action Plan
We believe industry can have a positive influence on the environment
We also believe BP Indonesia can be a leader in biodiversity conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources. Our Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) sets out a way to put our beliefs into practice
Indonesia is one of just 12 countries considered to have the greatest biodiversity on earth. But like other countries with high biodiversity values and rapidly increasing populations, Indonesia needs to find a way to use its rich natural resources to support vital economic and social growth – while also preserving biodiversity for its future generations. Faced with a challenge of this importance and complexity, biodiversity conservation in Indonesia has become more than an environmental issue. It is now also a key socio-political issue.

We recognize that successfully implementing a sustainable biodiversity action plan in Indonesia will not be easy, but at the same time, we recognize our responsibility to face the challenges involved. The BP Indonesia Biodiversity Action Plan sets out a strategy, key objectives and a timeframe for action. The BAP is not intended to stand alone; it compliments the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) referred to as the AMDAL, and our Environmental Management Systems (EMS). It sets definite limits on the scope of our activities too – in order to make sure we focus our resources to achieve real, positive and sustainable results.

The BAP outlines planned actions across Indonesia, but initially focuses on the Berau Bintuni Bay region, and more specifically the area close to the Tangguh LNG plant. Starting here, BP Indonesia, working with like-minded partners (other businesses, conservation organizations, government, universities and local communities) will support and promote practical initiatives to address high priority biodiversity issues. We will commit resources to projects we believe can make a real, measurable difference in the Bay area and Papua.
