The campaign in North Norway 2003-04
The objective of the advertisements in North Norway was to bring out local views of and attitudes to oil activities off the coast of North Norway. In this way we gained an insight into any concerns and objections the local communities might have.

Rolf Midtfjeld, fisherman
”We’re in the richest spawning area for fish in the world - the oil companies will destroy most of it.”What BP do:
A clean environment is important for our existence. Our goal is no harmful discharges. We therefore pump produced water back into the reservoirs on our fields in Norway. BP

Anette H. Skaar, Student
“The resources below the seabed are to be used, but today there is too much exploitation without thinking that there is a future to come.”What BP do:
We contribute to covering today’s energy needs. In addition, we spend several billion on production of and research into future energy sources. BP is one of the world’s largest solar cell manufacturers and a major consumer of renewable energy. We also develop more effective and less polluting fuel. BP

Ole Petter Rafsahl, Librarian
“There are substantial financial interests in the oil industry. If a discovery is proved, they won’t stop until everything has been recovered. It would be naïve to believe anything else.”What BP do:
Exploration for and production of oil requires billions. It is a long-term industry. The authorities and our own guidelines stipulate the framework for our activities. Our business must benefit society. Therefore we believe in an open dialogue and solutions in the best interest of all parties. BP

Lasse Bjørback, maintenance worker
“If I ran an oil company, I would stay away from Northern Norway. This area is especially vulnerable.”What BP do:
Indeed the coast off Northern Norway is vulnerable. One of the world’s most abundant fishing areas requires extra caution. BP makes the most stringent environmental demands on itself and works actively to reduce the environmental impacts. We have carried out oil production for many years in particularly sensitive areas of Alaska. We will bring this experience with us to Northern Norway. BP
