South Caucasus Pipeline
Supplying gas to meet the needs of regional consumers.
The 692km South Caucasus Pipeline has been designed to transport gas from the Shah Deniz field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea, through Georgia and on to the Georgia-Turkey border.
South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP) is a gas pipeline to transport gas from Shah Deniz field from the Caspian Sea to Turkey. It follows the route of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) crude oil pipeline through Azerbaijan and Georgia to Turkey, where it is linked to the Turkish gas distribution system.
The length of this pipeline is 691km, with 443km in Azerbaijan and 250km in Georgia.
This is a 42-inch diameter pipeline. The SCP pipeline is capable of carrying up to seven billion cubic metres of gas.
First deliveries of gas to Turkey commenced on 30 September, 2006.
SCP is being constructed in the same corridor as the BTC pipeline in order to minimize the environmental and social impact, using the same integrated project team. At peak during the construction phase of the combined projects some 22,000 people were employed.
The SCP facilities include:

- 2 compressor stations (1 in Azerbaijan, 1 in Georgia)
- 1 intermediate pigging station
- 11 small block valves
Community Investment Programme (CIP)
The expansion of the South Caucasus Pipeline is part of the Shah Deniz Full Field Development project. This expansion will involve the laying of new pipeline across Azerbaijan and the construction of two new compressor stations in Georgia. This will triple the gas volumes exported through the pipeline to over 20 billion cubic metres per year.
At the border between Georgia and Turkey, the pipeline will link into other new pipelines to provide gas into Turkey and the European Union.
- The BTC/SCP CIP has been implemented in three countries with a total of US $25 million committed for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. Azerbaijan receives US $8 million for CIP
- BTC/SCP has fulfilled a strong CIP aiming to implement needed projects in each community it has affected. The CIP covers a wide range of projects in such areas as health, education, business, refurbishment, and building.
