Yorktown
Our history
BP Volunteers Yorktown had began in 1994 when the Amoco Corporation recognized that many of its retirees and their spouses were providing volunteer efforts in their neighborhoods worthy of special recognition.
The Amocares Yorktown Organization was formed from the Amoco Yorktown Annuitants Club. This club was predominatly made up of plank-owners of the Amoco Yorktown Refinery. Initial members were Don Meyer, Jack Locke, Bob Mitchem, Buddy Wakefield, Willie Reinhart, Bill Cunningham, John Dowdy, and Jim Baumgardner. When Amoco and BP merged, the name of the organization was changed from AMOCARES to BP Volunteers. When the refinery was purchased by Giant Industries, they have continued to support the volunteer efforts of the group.
The group meets for breakfast the second Monday of each month to share hospitality and and report volunteer activities.
In 2003, the reported volunteer effort to a variety of projects totaled 6,847 hours and travelled 23.353 miles. Based upon an estimated labor rate of $11.50 per hour and travel rate of $.13 per mile, the volunteer effort of annuitants and their spouses had a value of $82,243. In 2002, the value was $95,529.
