The first Amoco Canada Alumni Club meeting was held in the Bentall Building, downtown Calgary, in 1984, with 9 annuitants present.
Our History
In 1983, annuitants Mel MacDonald and Gordon Hill met and discussed the possible formation of an Alumni Club for Amoco Canada
After creating a proposal reflecting the clubs goals, what the annuitants expected to accomplish by establishing such a club, and what the annuitants would expect from Amoco Canada. This included such items as meeting rooms, stationary, reproduction and mailing privileges. Mel and Gordon meet with Lowell Becker, Manager of Employee Relations department to discuss this proposal. He thought that the proposal had a lot of merit to it and took it to Amoco Canada management and they approved the clubs formation.
Additional Alumni club information was obtained by contacting the Whiting Refinery Annuitants Club. They supplied Mel with a copy of the Whiting Refinery Club By-Laws. The original Calgary Alumni By-Laws were then created and patterned after Whiting’s.
The first Amoco Canada Alumni Club meeting was held in the Bentall Building, downtown Calgary, in 1984, with 9 annuitants present. The proposed By-Laws were read and approved by all present at the meeting. The following three annuitants were elected into the club executive:

The Amoco Canada Alumni Club was born.
In January 2003, a motion was unanimously passed to change the Amoco Canada Alumni Club name to BP Alumni Club. With that motion and vote, the Amoco Canada Alumni Club after a wonderful tenure of 18 years 5 months came to a very successful and distinguished ending. The newly named BP Alumni Club passed into birth.
Alumni Club Milestones
When the club was first formed no social functions were held due to the small number of members. However, in 1986 when the first retirement packages were handed out, by Amoco Canada, the enrolment in our club increased dramatically.
The first social event held, by the Club, was the Christmas Party. As the popularity of the Club grew a summer BBQ was added. These functions became quite popular because it gave former employees that had worked together for a great number of years a chance to renew old friendships.
In 1999, we expanded our social functions to include an Annual Golf Tournament. This tournament started out at the 18 hole Maple Ridge Golf Course in Calgary, in August 1999, with 44 golfers in attendance. The tournament moved to the 27 hole Heather Glen Golf Course, on the eastern city limits of Calgary, in August 2001, this has allowed for more golfers to attend.
With the popularity of computers and e-mail, the Alumni President Dave Thompson started communicating with the members of the Club by e-mail. In affect, the Alumni Club was moving into the modern electronic age. This became such a popular means of communicating information with the annuitants that Dave started up the ANTS Newsletter in 2001. Dave issued the Ants Newsletter until January 2002, when Mel and Darrel MacDonald took it over.
