What we do
From our manufacturing operations on three continents BP Petrochemicals serves its global customers
Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), Acetic Acid and Olefins and Derivatives are widely used chemical products that are derived from crude oil or natural gas. With further processing in our chemical plants they will be sold to companies that make products you might wear, ride on, have in your home or, in fact, eat.
Globally we focus our production on two specific but versatile types of chemicals: aromatics and acetyls. The Aromatics product PTA is a constituent part of Polyester. BP invented PTA, a key ingredient for making recyclable PET bottles, the ones most water and soft drinks are sold in. PTA is also used in clothing, home textiles, carpets and industrial fibre products. We also make paraxylene (PX) the raw material for PTA.
The Acetyls product Acetic Acid is a chemical best recognised for giving vinegar its sour taste and can be found in jars of pickles. It is one of the world’s most important raw materials for the production of a whole range of items in your shopping basket, from washing powder and paints to plastic drink bottles and food packaging.
In China, our SECCO joint venture produces a number of chemicals such as Styrene Monomer, one of the most important monomers used to make various chemical products; Olefins, reactive chemical intermediates including ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, and toluene; and their Derivatives which are used to make everything from food packaging, toys, and plastics in cars, to various synthetic rubbers. SECCO also makes Acrylonitrile for items such as acrylic fiber and synthetic rubber; and Acetonitrile used as an extraction solvent and for other applications.
Our objective is to produce and supply products that are critical building blocks for a wealth of consumer products in the world's growth markets, cost effectively and in an environmental friendly way, by employing the best people, taking care of our community, and delivering value to our shareholders.
