We believe that all our employees have the right to enjoy a healthy and productive work / life balance at all stages of their career. Through our innovative working practices and commitment to dialogue, BP has consistently set new standards that ensure this is a reality and not just an aspiration for our workforce.

Flexible working

We're trying lots of different ways to give people a choice of work style. In some jobs, in some parts of the world, we can allow flextime or part-time work. Depending on your location and what your job is, telecommuting and teleconferencing may take the place of travel. We believe technology offers people a better life, so it's only natural that it can be used to help people balance their lives better too.
We’ve developed a comprehensive IT infrastructure to facilitate flexible working where appropriate. For example, many staff have mobile phones and laptop computers, set up to be able to remotely access the BP server while they are away on business or need to work from home. Where it is appropriate to do so and with the support of a line manager, it is not uncommon for staff to work from home on a regular basis.

Time for living

BP does not encourage a long-hours culture, which we believe is detrimental to the well-being of our workforce as a whole.
Of course, given the demanding and global nature of our business, there are times when you may be required to work extra or unsocial hours – in particular if working offshore – but you’ll also find that BP takes full account of such efforts and will make sure you benefit from extra time off and other compensatory measures as a result.
You’ll also find access to a full range of gyms, sports and social clubs across many BP sites. This means that people have a chance to keep fit as well as having the opportunity to participate in a number of teams on a friendly and competitive basis.

Family friendly

As an employer, we understand the immense importance and value of family in the lives of our employees. We also appreciate that many people need to balance their professional lives with the needs and responsibilities associated with a partner and family.
As well as a strong commitment to flexible working practices, we have a wide range of family friendly policies which mean that our people can get the most from this crucial element in their lives without compromising their professional development or career aspirations.
Depending on your location, options may include career breaks, marriage leave, maternity/paternity or adoption leave, and parental leave. There are many more ideas we're trying in different parts of the world.
