Frontiers Issue 19: August 2007

Managing Editor Terry Knott welcomes readers to this issue of Frontiers, the BP magazine of technology and innovation
The recurring theme running through this issue of Frontiers highlights the challenge of meeting future world energy demand - and BP's plans for applying new and existing technology to help do this.

In the Update news section (downloadable as a PDF, right) we report on important moves by the company in bringing biotechnology to bear on energy matters, including biofuels production and microbial oil recovery, and also present the latest news on BP's increasing involvement in processing coal to produce hydrogen for clean power generation.

Following on with the main feature articles, we focus in more depth on the technologies that could help find and recover the second and third trillion barrels of oil; new moves for winning natural gas from unconventional reservoirs; refinery processes that can convert more difficult crude oil feedstocks and their by-products into useful energy supplies; and the technology investment that is taking place to make solar power a more economic alternative energy source.

This issue also marks a refreshed design for Frontiers, which we hope will add to your enjoyment of reading about BP's leading moves in the fast changing world of energy supply.
