Energy facts and figures
The way we use energy and the types of energy we use have never been more important. But where does that energy come from and what do you know about it?
Facts about BP
BP is a big company:- BP runs 24,600 service stations
- BP provides fuel and other services for several million customers every day
- About 97,000 people work for BP

World energy
The most important energy fuels are oil, gas and coal. Did you know:- Russia produces more gas than any other country in the world
- The UK uses over 80 million tonnes of oil each year
- China consumes more coal than any other country
- The USA uses nearly one quarter of the world’s oil
- Africa consumes less than 4% of the world’s oil
Protecting the environment
BP works hard to find ways to produce energy without damaging the planet:- As well as supplying gas and oil, BP spends money on several renewable energy projects
- BP is carrying out research to find out how fuels can be made from plants: these are called biofuels
- BP is developing a power station in Scotland which produces electricity from natural gas without polluting the air
- BP owns two wind farms in the Netherlands and is building five wind power projects in the USA
- BP owns one of the largest solar electric companies, BP Solar, and has developed a new, efficient type of solar cell which can turn sunlight into electricity
- BP has plans to build a new clean power station in California which stores carbon dioxide underground
- BP operates several gas-fired power stations around the world – these release less than half as much greenhouse gas pollution as a coal-fired power station
- In all BP has been taking action to reduce climate change for over 10 years
