Man with a walky talky at port
While the shipping industry is facing shortages of skilled sea staff in its traditional recruitment markets, there is also growing demand for the skills of our staff across the BP Group. This is due to the increasing need for experienced marine assurance specialists. As a result we have become a global recruiter in recent years.
BP Maritime Services (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. recruits, employs and manages our seafarers directly. Our safety culture, business investment and evolving ability to offer seafarers a worthwhile career both onboard our ships and ashore mean we are confident we are able to recruit the people we need. In addition, each year we sponsor at least 60 new officer trainees (Cadets).

BP Maritime Services (Singapore) Pte. Limited

BP Maritime Services (Singapore) Pte. Limited is based in Singapore and supported by a logistics office in the Isle of Man, BP Maritime Services (Isle of Man) Limited. These entities were established in August 2007.
The role of BPMS is to ensure every officer sailing with BP Shipping works within a clear management structure linking performance to pay and involving the support of a career development manager with whom regular career-related discussions can be held.
In 2006 we also revamped our entry procedures by raising the required educational standards for officer trainees, introducing BP-specific induction courses and enhancing the safety and environmental focus of our initial training courses. In future we expect onboard mentoring of officer trainees to become standard practice.

Communication

Good communication is central to the creation of a more inclusive organisation. As well as a number of information initiatives and our online publication, The Flag, we have Sea Staff Communications & Consultative Forum (SCCF) to encourage more direct and positive two-way dialogue with shore management. A handbook on seafarers’ terms and conditions of employment was also developed and issued early in 2007.

Diversity

Employing a diverse workforce at sea remains a challenge both in terms of gender and ethnicity. Nevertheless we value diversity and seek to promote it through awareness programmes, diversity champions and the use of diverse selection panels for senior level management jobs.
