Interns

4 men in hard hats
As a first step, nothing prepares you better for a career with us than an internship. Whether you are here for the summer or a year, you’ll be a valued part of our business. You’ll work on real projects that deliver tangible benefits and measurable results. At the same time, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about and help to solve some of the most important issues we face.
This kind of experience is invaluable, and our internships are highly regarded, having won many awards. In 2008 we received the National Council for Work Experience (NCWE) Quality Mark for the high standards we achieve with the programme.
Every year, we take around 80 interns studying a range of disciplines into our summer and year-long programmes, many of whom go on to join our graduate development scheme. Opportunities exist in all major areas of BP to explore your career aspirations and develop the technical and behavioural skills you will need for a successful career, while earning a competitive salary and learning about the world of business.
Summer internships last from 10 to 13 weeks and one-year internships offer in-depth work experience. Experience genuine teamwork, and work alongside highly qualified and experienced colleagues, while you work on live projects and operations, using the latest equipment and technology.
Internships are targeted primarily at penultimate year undergraduate and postgraduate students.
There are a small number of exceptions e.g. Chemical Engineering one year internships are also open to students for year 3 of a 5 year sandwich course and opportunities in Petroleum and Reservoir Engineering, Geoscience, Petrophysics exist also for students who are currently studying for a Masters degree (although a summer 2010 internship will most likely lead to assessment for a graduate position starting in Sept 2011)

Preparing you for the future

At the beginning of your internship we discuss with you the skills we hope you will develop and encourage you to keep a record of your progress. All interns are supported by a line manager who sets your objectives with you and ensures you have the training and equipment to succeed. A detailed and focused appraisal process is essential to ensure that you get the most from your experience. Your line manager will monitor your progress and discuss it with you throughout the internship, and specifically during a mid-internship appraisal. This helps you to see where you are succeeding and what else is needed before the end of the internship. As well as this, you will also be assigned a mentor who helps network you across BP, discusses your progress and can address any questions you have.
Depending on your performance, you could be offered the chance for graduate assessment at the end of your internship - with the possibility of a job offer before you finish your final academic year.
