Joining Trading
BP is one of the largest traders of oil and gas in the world. Integrated Supply and Trading (IST) is the market-facing component of our trading activities. It combines all our oil, gas, power and chemical trading activities, and has a dedicated financial markets trading team that manages our daily exposure to global currency and interest rate fluctuations. We work with financial institutions like commodity exchanges, investment banks and hedge funds, as well as companies looking to reduce their exposure to the risks of changing oil prices. If you have a passion for trading and the ambition to work in a fast-paced, energetic environment, explore the trading opportunities within IST in Europe.
Work in IST demands innovative thinking, an entrepreneurial spirit and a capacity to relate well with colleagues. We’re looking for people with a strong academic record and a 2:1 or higher degree in any discipline.
Going there, and beyond.
The Trader Development Programme (TDP) is a two- to three-year programme focused on developing trading professionals. Through a combination of continual training and job rotations we will expose you to one of the hottest sectors and some of the best traders in the energy industry.
Each role in the rotation will allow you to make a tangible contribution to BP’s performance. In fact many TDP roles are reserved specifically for participants within the programme, giving you immediate access to the traders and trading teams. It’s a competitive programme and expectations are high, but the TDP is an ideal platform for top performers, helping you to develop skills in areas such as risk, trade control, trade analytics and trading. You are likely to spend at least one year in a trade control analyst role and one year in an operations role, gaining experience in a number of IST businesses to broaden your knowledge. The programme culminates in the opportunity to attend our Assessed Trader Course (ATC), which will determine your potential to move into a challenging trading role.
Preparing you for the future
Your learning and development is our primary focus. That’s why our carefully thought-out approach provides the opportunities to deepen technical knowledge and personal capability through practical experience, while formal training is tailored to your needs. The training offering is extensive, including certain courses that are only available to TDP, such as swaps, options and futures courses. Rich, personal learning will be developed through job rotations, on-the-job experience, personal mentoring, in-house and external training courses, expert advice and regular appraisals and feedback. You will have every opportunity to grow into a respected trader as quickly as is possible and right for you.
Each year, certain selected successful applicants are invited to take part in our BP trading workshop. During these workshops you’ll learn more about trading at BP by participating in trading games and social events in an informal environment. Over the two days you can speak with recent graduates, traders and senior managers about our opportunities. Invitations to the workshops will be sent to those who apply early and do well in the initial screening process. All successful candidates from our trading workshops will be invited to a final assessment centre.
