Primary energy consumption

Perth skyline at night, Australia
World primary energy consumption – including oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear, and hydro power – grew by 1.4% in 2008, the slowest growth since 2001

Methodology

In this Review, primary energy comprises commercially traded fuels only. Whilst they are important in many countries, fuels such as wood, peat and animal waste are excluded since they are documented unreliably in terms of consumption statistics. Also excluded are wind, geothermal and solar power generation.

The units of data in the primary energy consumption tables are in million tonnes oil equivalent (mtoe).
