BP Community Support
At BP Exploration Alaska, we believe that being part of a community comes with certain responsibilities.
BP is one of the largest private sector investors in Alaska, but our investments extend beyond our business to the communities where we operate and where our employees and their families live. BP believes it can best support communities by helping to build skills and leadership, growing community capacity, and helping to bring about measurable and long-term community improvement.
In 2007, BP contributed $11 million to support more than 200 nonprofit and educational organizations and programs in Alaska. More than $3 million was contributed to the University of Alaska Foundation. This commitment carries no restriction in terms of use of the funds, but is intended to support the university in its goal of helping Alaska develop a more diversified, sustainable and self-sufficient economy.
BP supports many educational and workforce development programs, and provides 25 four-year scholarships each year to graduating high school seniors statewide. BP also recognizes 30 outstanding educators through the annual Teachers of Excellence program.
We take a long-term view of our community involvement. We believe we can best support communities by helping to build skills and leadership, and to grow community capacity, thereby fostering human progress and helping to bring about measurable and long-term community improvement.
BP Employees Support Alaska Communities
Our employees support more than 250 different Alaska community organizations and 150 youth teams in nearly 30 Alaskan communities.
BP’s employees contributed more than $500,000 to United Way and other community and education organizations in 2007. They also contributed thousands of volunteer hours to lead organizations, building houses, cleaning up communities, developing parks, coaching and mentoring kids, helping in classrooms, serving meals to the hungry and raising funds to educate people about serious health issues. The company matches employee donations, volunteer hours and fundraising efforts.
