Hydrogen power

Why hydrogen power?

Hydrogen power is a new and exciting concept – one that could revolutionise the world of low-carbon electricity generation. This new generation of power stations will use hydrocarbon feedstocks such as coal, natural gas or petroleum coke (a by-product of refining oil), processing them into hydrogen, and carbon dioxide, which is captured and stored permanently and deep underground. BP is a leader in developing the technology of carbon capture and storage.

Such power stations have massive potential worldwide as they mean countries can continue to use fossil fuels while reducing the environmental impact of today’s power plants. This is particularly significant for major coal users such as the US, China and India.

To take full advantage of the opportunities offered by hydrogen power BP has formed a new company owned jointly with Rio Tinto, Hydrogen Energy. Hydrogen Energy combines BP’s world leading skills in chemical processing and carbon capture and storage with Rio Tinto’s experience as a major coal producer and handler.

Hydrogen Energy is exploring several potential projects, including plans to build a 420MW power plant in Abu Dhabi.
