Fuels and lubricants for transport vehicles

In 2030, it is expected that there will be 800 million more cars on the road than there are today. Oil is likely to continue to be the main energy source fueling these vehicles
The fuels and lubricants industries are focused on providing the transport sector with increased mobility in a more sustainable way. This means delivering greater fuel efficiency (more miles per gallon) and also reducing emissions.

For BP fuels and Castrol lubricants, the challenge lies in delivering formulations that deliver reduced emissions from vehicles and meeting a variety of customer demands. For fuels, that is more performance and for lubricants, it can differ from region to region. For example, providing an engine lubricant that performs in the extreme cold of a Russian winter, or the extreme heat of a South African summer.

New fuel and lubricant formulations are crucial

Responding to these needs requires a leading position in the field of fuel and lubricant chemistry and formulations and working with vehicle manufacturers to advance engine technology and related equipment.

High-tech testing and partnering

In tests more stringent than the norms of the automobile industry, Castrol’s EDGE synthetic engine oil has been shown to outperform competitor oils when examining the key performance factors customers look for. BP also partners with global vehicle manufacturers and specialist gearbox and axle manufacturers to “co-engineer” new products for advanced engine hardware.

As part of the testing of BP Ultimate, some 1,600,000km were driven (the equivalent to two trips to the moon) and performance benefits such as improved fuel economy, lower emissions and a cleaner engine were shown. BP Ultimate is now sold in more than 100 cities in 17 countries.

Better performance is being delivered

BP fuels and Castrol lubricants have already achieved a leading technology position and many benefits for customers. BP Ultimate can clean up to four times more effectively than conventional fuels, gradually removing engine deposits as well as preventing new ones. Castrol’s Elixion SAPS 5W-30 lubricant, used in truck fleets, can deliver 4% fuel savings and reduce oil consumption by 10%.

BP believes that by leading the fields of fuel and lubricant technology it will continue to deliver customers what they demand.
