A six part series examining the history and evolution of the petroleum industry in Trinidad and Tobago.
Part 1 - Striking Oil in T&T
The closest the T&T oil and gas industry comes to a swashbuckling past is the saga of Walter Darwent, the thrice-transplanted Englishman, with salt-and-pepper bushy sideburns and whiskers, an adventurer, soldier and mineral prospector who had practised as an architect and civil engineer in Port of Spain.
By the turn of the 20th century oil had long been found and produced in Trinidad. The US served as a guiding light in the early days of oil development in T&T where some people still saw the industry as an eccentric's sense of mission.
