The closest the T&T oil and gas industry comes to a swashbuckling past is the saga of Walter Darwent, the thrice-transplanted Englishman, with salt-and-pepper bushy sideburns and whiskers, an adventurer, soldier and mineral prospector who had practised as an architect and civil engineer in Port of Spain.

Part 2 - The Dramatic Rise of the Oil Industry

By the turn of the 20th century oil had long been found and produced in Trinidad. The US served as a guiding light in the early days of oil development in T&T where some people still saw the industry as an eccentric's sense of mission.
