Refining
BP Australia's petroleum products are manufactured by refining crude oil at the company's refineries at Kwinana in Western Australia and Bulwer Island in Queensland
Petrol sold in Australia is either refined from crude oil in Australian refineries or imported as a finished product from overseas refineries.
The crude oil which is refined into petroleum products is shipped in from a diverse range of sources, including the Middle East, West Africa, New Zealand, Indonesia and north-west Australia. In 2006-07, Australian refineries supplied around 75% of total Australian demand for petroleum products. The remaining 25% of demand was met by imports.
Australia’s refineries are relatively small compared to the newer, larger refineries in the region, particularly in Singapore, which is the main source of imported products. Of the eight refineries in Australia, BP operates two – Bulwer Island and Kwinana.
