Responsible award

In 2009, BP reviewed and refreshed its values, introducing the Responsible value to encompass BP’s commitment to safety and development alongside environmental leadership. The Responsible award therefore replaces the Green award

Challenge

China faces many environmental challenges, including a chronic shortage of water. Shanghai is particularly affected due to its limited water supply sources and increasing demand for industrial development. This makes it difficult for foreign enterprises to develop business in China without demonstrating their commitment to environmentally sound operations.

Summary

China faces many environmental challenges, including a chronic shortage of water. SECCO’s solution is to reduce, reuse and recycle water, through innovative plant design and application of the best global technology. The result is a reduction of 9.6 million tons of cooling water and $660,000 savings per year.

Solution

SECCO, a joint venture between BP and Sinopec, was founded with a vision of environmental leadership. Working with experts from across China and globally, SECCO tackled water consumption by applying best practice and technology to its plant design and processes. The key is to reduce, reuse and recycle water as much as possible. Examples include:
  • ethylene cracker plant built with steam condensate recycle system
  • acrylonitrile plant designed with recycle and regeneration schemes to ensure self sufficiency for steam, washing, and cooling water
  • styrene plant built to reuse steam condensate for heat recovery and boiler water

Benefits

This comprehensive approach to water conservation enables SECCO to achieve world class efficiency for water use. The results include:
  • reduction of 9.6 million tons of cooling water per year
  • 15% decrease in water usage compared to plant design
  • water recycle rate of 97.94%, much higher than the standard requirement of 65%
  • environmental discharge reduced by 280,000 tons per year
  • the business is able to save $660,000 per year in operating costs
SECCO’s pioneering efforts are recognised by the Chinese government and it continues to seek new ideas to reduce its impact on the environment.

How an Emerald can cut emissions – The next generation of LNG ships

UK

The British Emerald is substantially more fuel-efficient than comparable steam powered LNG carriers, which will result in greatly reduced fuel costs and emissions. The British Emerald's DFDE system emits 25% less carbon dioxide and no sulphur dioxide emissions. Since BP ordered the first four vessels, the wider LNG industry has embraced this technology, making this the number one choice for today's LNG ship propulsion.
