How we report emissions

BP’s goal is to minimize the environmental impact of operations by reducing waste, emissions and discharges and using energy efficiently
An integral part of safe and reliable operations is minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) and non-GHG emissions to air, managing waste in a way that does not pose a harmful risk to the workforce, local communities or the environment, and using water as efficiently as possible, reducing the impact on local communities and the environment.

How and what we report

We report openly on our environmental emissions and do so in a number of ways. We have developed our approach over several years in consultation with stakeholders. We publish and provide interpretation of five-year HSE performance data. We also provide detailed site-level information within our mapping and charting tools, as well as thorough technical analyses of air emissions, waste and water management, and energy efficiency and GHG emissions data.

Moving towards more disaggregated local reporting

Over the next few years, we intend to phase out the reporting of aggregated environmental data on non-GHG emissions and discharges, such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, in favour of increased reporting of local disaggregated data.
This change, informed by stakeholder feedback, will emphasize the importance of managing and reporting emissions of local pollutants in a manner appropriate to the local context. It is also aligned with the operating managment system (OMS) and ISO certification. Both the OMS and ISO certification require local reporting units to manage their most significant risks and impacts. Our sites will continue to produce local reports on their environmental impacts. Many reporting units are already reporting locally on an expanded set of more environmentally relevant parameters.
Increased local reporting also supports the positive response we have received from users on the environmental mapping tool, which enables them to explore environmental performance of BP sites worldwide, offering additional information, summarizing the local environmental context and providing information on performance against local objectives and targets.
Although we are moving towards more local and disaggregated reporting, we will continue to disclose and comment on aggregate environmental emissions or trends where relevant. We will also continue to participate in benchmarking initiatives to help drive understanding of where our performance is good and where it can improve.
