Environmental mapping tool

Our mapping tool aims to demonstrate how we manage environmental issues locally, by presenting environmental management information from various BP sites worldwide
Through the mapping tool, you can review details of how selected sites are addressing four environmental aspects – air emissions (non-greenhouse gas), freshwater use, waste water, and waste – as well as whether or not they are adjacent to or within a protected area1.
The mapping tool shows all major operating sites2. This includes BP refineries, chemical plants, Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) facilities, solar plants and exploration and production assets. Smaller assets such as retail station networks and blending plants are not included as they tend to be distributed throughout countries or regions, thus not easily mapped.
In the case of the North Sea major operating site (which shares a single ISO 14001 certificate) it is displayed in this mapping tool as six distinct assets in order to provide more meaningful and detailed data. Additionally, some sites which are not under BP’s operational control have elected to provide a response to the environmental mapping tool survey.
These sites, many of which are ISO 14001 certified, are plotted on background maps that illustrate regional environmental conditions to help put site information into local context. All of our major operating sites are required to produce externally verified site reports (VSRs) which provide more in depth information on the performance of that site. The environmental mapping tool links to these VSRs.

Using the tool

To use the tool, select the issue of interest to view the a map of site locations and a global overview. For more local information, select a region of the world and then click on a site location marker to view details about the site.
A green location marker indicates the site in question is under BP’s control. A white location marker indicates that the site in question is under BP’s influence. By ‘control’ we mean that we either own the assets and engage or employ the workforce, or we operate the asset under a contractual obligation to another owner. By ‘influence’, we mean that we do not have control in this way, but have a commercial share or interest in the venture, or that another entity operates assets that we own.

Information sources

The current information used to support the tool is generated from site responses to a questionnaire survey designed to obtain detail on the management of environmental issues and carried out in January 2009.

1 Protected Areas include the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) category I – IV, Ramsar Sites and World Heritage sites both cultural and natural.
2 A site or grouping of sites that produce or manage petroleum, chemical, or manufactured products where such products, their production processes, or their exploration processes have the potential to cause significant impact on the environment or the safety and health of employees, neighbours, or consumers.
