BP in the Middle East
BP has a 100 year association with the Middle East that goes back to the foundation of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in 1909
Upstream activities in the Middle East range from joint ventures with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company to exploration and appraisal activities in Jordan, and the development of tight gas fields in Oman and the super giant Rumaila field in Iraq.
BP signed a production sharing agreement with the Government of Oman in January 2007 for the appraisal and development of the Khazzan/Makarem gas fields (2,800 km2). As one of the leading specialists in the production of tight gas, BP is applying innovative technology and proprietary expertise to unlock this potential.
In January 2010, the Government of Jordan endorsed BP farm-in with Jordan’s state-owned National Petroleum Company (NPC) to exploit the onshore Risha concession in the north east of the country. The Risha concession, awarded by the Government to NPC, covers an area of about 7,000 km2 and includes the Risha gas field.
In December 2010, BP announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell almost all of its exploration and production assets in Pakistan to United Energy Group Limited (UEG).

BP signed a major production-sharing agreement on 22 January 2007 to appraise Block 61, containing four gas reservoirs that could yield resources of some 20 - 30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Block 61 covers an area of 2,800 km2 in central Oman, including the Khazzan and Makarem gas fields which were discovered in 1990’s but have remained undeveloped due to the complexity of the ‘tight gas’ reservoirs.
As one of the leading specialists in the production of tight gas, BP is applying innovative technology and proprietary expertise to unlock this potential and is currently conducting a multi-year programme to fully appraise the reservoirs.
