Giving and volunteering

Engineers, East Texas, USA
BP responds to humanitarian needs that arise from natural disasters and other events, particularly in locations close to where we work
Through the BP Foundation, we committed $8.4 million in 2008 to humanitarian aid. We supported relief efforts for the victims of the earthquake in the Sichuan Province of China; the conflict in Georgia; Hurricanes Gustav and Ike and the California wild fires in the US. We have dispersed funds through agencies such as CARE International UK, the American Red Cross, and locally based relief organizations. We also continued our longer-term support for recovery in areas of the US affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Charitable giving

When BP employees choose to support charitable activities, the BP Foundation’s Employee Matching Fund matches their personal donations, volunteer time or – under specific circumstances – fundraising. In 2008 employees gave around $7.1 million, volunteered their time and raised funds to benefit charitable organizations worldwide. These activities were matched by grants of more than $9.9 million from the BP Foundation.

In the US, the Fabric of America Employee Fund is a programme that provides a tangible way for US employees to engage in giving personally and make a difference in their communities. Under the programme, employees in communities across the country request that BP America make a $250 or $500 contribution to a non-profit organization. Donations are made on the employee's behalf, subject to the non-profit organization meeting BP’s selection criteria, and do not require any matching contribution by the employee. In 2008 BP America donated more than $3.6 million to over 8,700 non-profit groups and causes in the US.
