Man walking down steps at Carson refinery
Welcome to BP Carson Refinery

History

In 1923 Pan-American Petroleum bought a 100-acre tract of land near the Los Angeles harbor close to the recent oil discoveries in Southern California. This was the site that later became BP Carson. Fourteen years later the Richfield Oil Company of California bought Pan-American Petroleum and built the Watson Refinery on the Carson site. By 1938, the refinery was brought online with an initial capacity of 50,000 barrels per day. A pioneer in the production of 100-octane aviation gasoline, the refinery played a crucial role in meeting the military needs of World War II.

The refinery underwent multiple major renovations and upgrades over the years. In 1987 the Watson Cogeneration Plant was built, which is still the largest such plant in the state. By the time BP took over in April of 2000, the BP Carson Refinery was the largest of its kind in California.

Today

BP Carson now covers 630 acres and has 1,100 employees supported by 600 contractors. The refinery processes 275,000 barrels each day, a large part of which comes from the Alaskan North Slope. About 90 percent of the crude oil that enters BP Carson emerges as transportation fuel, supplying roughly 25 percent of Southern California’s gasoline and roughly 40 percent of its diesel fuel.

Over half of a billion dollars has been recently invested into BP Carson to improve efficiency and meet California’s strict quality and environmental standards. Our commitment to clean, safe energy is reflected in the numerous workplace safety and community awards BP Carson has received over the years.
