Cherry Point
Welcome to BP Cherry Point Refinery
History
Located in northwest Washington, BP’s Cherry Point Refinery was commissioned in 1971 to process 100,000 barrels of crude oil each day from the Alaska North Slope. Our production capability today stands at 230,000 barrels, making it the largest refinery in the state and the third-largest refinery on the West Coast. More than 700 full-time employees and 500 contractors work in the refinery, which is laid out over roughly a square mile. From the 230,000 barrels of crude oil, BP Cherry Point every day produces 2.5 million gallons of jet fuel, 3.5 million gallons of gasoline, 2.2 million gallons of diesel, 360,000 gallons of butane and 140,000 gallons of propane. The refinery also is the world’s largest supplier of calcinated coke (2,700 tons per day) to the world’s aluminum industry. In fact, one in six aluminum cans is made using BP Cherry Point’s calcinated coke. With all this capacity, it’s easy to see how the BP Cherry Point Refinery plays a critical role in BP’s production and distribution of energy for the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
The Clean Gasoline Unit came online at BP Cherry Point in 2004. This $115 million project was designed to produce a nearly sulfur-free gasoline, exceeding all current and impending quality regulations. By developing this new, cleaner gasoline, we help remove 620 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions each year — the equivalent of 40,000 fewer cars on the road each day.
Today
We’ve just completed an $85 million Clean Diesel Unit, allowing us to produce ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel that meets or exceeds all on-road diesel regulations. With nearly half a billion dollars invested in improvements over the past ten years and significant upgrades slated for the future, BP Cherry Point Refinery is strongly positioned to help meet future energy needs.
